PILGRIMAGE VOL. II
MAZAM (2025)
The quartet MAZAM was formed in 2018 with the initial aim of performing compositions by saxophonist João Mortágua. However, it soon evolved into a collective focused on musical co-creation, as reflected in their debut album, Land, released in 2019 by Carimbo Porta-Jazz. This album already includes several tracks built from shared ideas, inspired at times by extra-musical sources from each of the four members. This style of composition and improvisation would go on to define the group’s artistic identity, culminating—after numerous concerts and recording sessions—in the album Pilgrimage.
With this new release, the aim is to explore new forms of collective composition, based on premises, rules, definitions of abstract and concrete concepts, and/or more conventional forms. In doing so, we seek to create a unique and distinctive approach.
